Minnie Mouse Dresses
This past weekend we went to Disney World with our mothers. Christian’s mom has never been before, my parents go every weekend. And it was fun as always.
But let us back up a bit. On Thursday before our trip I mentioned that I needed to make a new Minnie skirt for Dinah (she has outgrown her old one). And Christian was like “it would be cool if you could make it like a dress.” Like a dress? Oh, so he thinks I should make a dress. Sure, why not make two? I’ve got two days. Easy.
Except not so. Thursday night was eaten up by Children’s Ministry stuff and my Baby, Take a Bow post. So, that left Friday night. Yay?
They were finished pretty much just in time to get in the car and drive to Orlando. No, I did not sleep. Yes, I am crazy.
But look how cute!!
Their dresses were made from a hodge-podge of patterns. I used a self drafted bodice with white neck binding…
the sleeves from the Shirley Temple dress…

and a circle skirt.
For the white sash I just used simple grosgrain ribbon.
And (of course) they had to have matching bows.
I was EXHAUSTED after a night of no sleep and a day roaming the Magic Kingdom, but it was worth it. I received so many compliments on their dresses. Affirmation = energy for me, so it worked out nicely. :) But next time, I think I will try not to be so ambitious!
Here are the little Minnies enjoying their day at Disney.

Just darling! I love the look and how you pieced it together from multiple things and at the eleventh hour (it’s just how I work too!). Thanks for linking to Craftastic Monday at Sew Can Do:)
Thanks! I don’t think I can ever get anything done ahead of time…I need that deadline to work towards.
Thank you for hosting the linky party…I look forward to joining you guys more often!
Seriously!? With the band-aid knees and red chucks I want to reach through the screen and pinch her to make sure she is real! Good job sleepy Momma! And, I guess we need to hang out more b/c I don’t remember Esther being so big!
Thanks!…I know the chucks throw this look right over the edge of too-cuteness. And, yes, Esther insists on growing. I keep thinking “where did my baby go?”
I love these dresses!! Found you on the MADE flickr group. You did a great job!
Thanks, Mary Jo! I’m glad you liked them…they were really fun to make and the girls loved them.
They are so sweet! You did a lovely job on the dresses and deserve every compliment you received!
Thanks so much, Anne! That’s very sweet of you to say.
So stinking cute!!!! I love all things Disney—the dresses were worth staying up to make! The pictures are priceless.

Thanks, Liz! I just love Disney too. It is fun going around to all the linky parties this time of year and seeing all the Disney crafts and sewing. Too many ideas!
Adorable dresses!!! I’m your newest follower from Polkadot linky party. Hope you can visit me sometime at Kindergarten & Preschool for Parents & Teachers.
Thanks, Susan! I did visit your site…so helpful! Dinah is starting Preschool this fall, so I know I will need lots of tips.
My daughter totally needs one of these dresses! She loves dresses, loves minnie and we are going to be a hour from disney world this summer so I am trying to talk the hubby in to a quick trip. Needless to say I LOVE these dresses!!!
They look absolutely adorable! Love the dresses. I’m impressed you were able to sew them so fast.
Thanks, Susan! I totally set things up like an assembly line when I am doing more than one outfit. It really only takes a little bit longer to make more than one like that.
AWESOME! I would sure try something like this.

SO adorable and perfect for Disney!
Thanks so much!
SO darling!!!! What a fun time! Love the first picture too!! It’s a good thing my daughter’s not sitting on my lap, she’d be grabbing the computer and demanding I make her a dress like that, which has been on the to do list but I haven’t pulled an all- nighter to finish.
Thanks, Emily! These were actually very easy to put together…I am just a notorious procrastinator. I know all about the sewing to do list! Mine is about a mile long now, but I am on a sewing embargo until VBS is over in mid July.
Completely adorable! We are going to Disney in 5 months, and I was contemplating whether or not I would have time to finish…then I read your comment about finishing these in one night! You are quite talented! I completely understand the deadline need, however, my meager skills definitetly need a longer timeline! I do have a question having made some of Dana’s circle skirts. Did you use white elastic on the waist, or just a pice of white fabric to connect the bodice and skirt parts? Thank you so much!
Thanks so much! I’m glad you liked their dresses. They are actually really easy to put together. What I do for the skirts is make the circle skirt as per Dana’s tutorial. But then I cut a slit down one side so the skirt opens up. Then I pin it right sides together to the completed bodice. From there I attach the zipper, finish the seams and do whatever I plan to do for the hem. (Usually a rolled hem, but this time I used bias tape as a hem facing.) I hope that makes sense! Please do let me know if you have more questions! I am always glad to help! And I would love to see your dresses when they are finished. You can send me pictures or add them to my Flickr group.
